Size (and manners) doesn't matter
I don't know what was more surprising at the CW party: Seeing Johnson City's Matt Czuchry take a bet and climb on top of the network's 12-foot-tall "W" or the how quickly Alexis Bledel dismissed me. Or, maybe, it was the vanishing act CW publicist Pam Morrison pulled during the latter. Regardless, one thing has not changed as the WB becomes the CW: The network's publicity staff remains virtually worthless.
To say the least, my brief meeting with Alexis was, well, awkward, mainly because none of our mutual friends decided to tell me she had broken up with longtime significant other, Milo Ventimiglia, who has been a friend of mine for years. I found out just minutes before seeing her -- and the breakup, apparently, was months ago. For all I know, she could be thinking I know all the details or I planned to pry, neither of which are true.
That's the trouble when you are the friend of a couple: When they split, everyone else pays for it as well. I can't say I know Alexis very well, but from what I do know, she is a sweet and lovely person, and I still regard her that way.
Alexis did hold court at the party, but not with me.
I don't know the details of her breakup, and I really don't care. It's no one's business. All I know is that our quick "hello" ended with a knowing look and her assurance she would be right back to talk. Then, less than 5 minutes later, she walked by me and out the door.
As for Matt Czuchry, her co-star: Well, after he and I geeked out over comic books and traded some smack over a potential basketball face off that we may have later this year, he got a little wild. Four female writers from "Gilmore" offered him $200 to climb up on the giant "CW" letters that adorned the party's lawn.
And he did it. Actors will do anything for money. He plans to use the money to do the Lord's work -- buying comic books.
I also talked to plenty of others: Andrew Lawrence, Donnie Wahlberg and "One Tree Hill" beauties Bevin Prince and Danneel Harris.
The two cuties found out through me that Lawrence was dateless and looking. And they were interested. A grateful Lawrence was appreciative of the information -- let's put it that way and leave it at that.
Well, at least someone scored that night.
