"Gilmore Girls"
100th episode

It wasn't supposed to end up this way for Amy Sherman-Palladino and Daniel Palladino. The husband-and-wife executive producer team of "Gilmore Girls" met while working as staff writers on "Roseanne" in the early 1990s and presumed that their lives would forever involve penning sitcom scripts. But when the pair decided to give the family dramedy game a try, "Gilmore" came to life. A hundred episodes later, their baby finds itself at a creative and popular zenith with no end in sight. The couple who consider themselves "comedy writers in exile" sat recently for an interview in Sherman-Palladino's comfy and eccentric office on the Warner Bros. Studios lot with Ray Richmond for The Hollywood Reporter. Fragrant candles burned throughout.

The Hollywood Reporter: How is it that a couple of frustrated comedy writers wound up presiding over one of the longest-running dramas in the WB Network's history?
Daniel Palladino: We're just amazingly fortunate to be where we are because it's an impossible comedy market out there. The track record of sitcoms lately speaks for itself. The system doesn't work. It has become a kind of closed door to any kind of innovative ideas.
Amy Sherman-Palladino: Comedy writers are now viewed strictly as the guys who sit down and implement the network notes. Good sitcom writers aren't trusted anymore. Luckily, we've been able to make a drama with very solid comedy aspects to it.

THR: How have you been able to pull that off?
Sherman-Palladino: We got really lucky because we came along at a time when (then-WB entertainment chief) Susanne Daniels was comfortable with strong producers who had vision, like ("Buffy the Vampire Slayer" creator) Joss Whedon and ("Dawson's Creek" creator) Kevin Williamson. They also originally put us on opposite (NBC's) "Friends" and then (CBS') "Survivor," so there were zero expectations. We were able to come in and very quietly do our thing and didn't burn anything down, so they left us alone.

THR: Was the idea with "Gilmore" to sort of sneak a comedy on the air in a dramatic package?

Palladino: No, not really. We've never been a fan of traditional, ultraserious dramas anyway because most people's loves don't reflect that. Even in the warfare and conflict that define family relationships, there is humor.

THR: Who have been your biggest influences?
Sherman-Palladino:I'm a Norman Lear kid and a huge "All in the Family" fanatic. I (also) worship Jim Brooks and "Mary Tyler Moore."
Palladino: The classic comedies are classics for a reason. You can still watch "Taxi" and get a great laugh. We're also big Monty Python fans. There are a lot of those same rhythms in "Gilmore Girls." Dennis Potter, for his reality and humor, is another major influence.

THR: You seem to have made a little bit of a conscious effort this season to shake up the story line in Stars Hollow. Ratings are up, so obviously whatever you guys are doing is working.
Sherman-Palladino:Well, there wasn't really any mandate to shake things up this year. This was just the flow that made sense. We're getting way more feedback than usual, especially after Rory's (Alexis Bledel) having had sex with a married man at the end of last season. People are split between praying for her soul and
celebrating the fact she's a whore. It's great to have this renewed energy. The story lines are just fun; our actors are really enjoying themselves.
Palladino: The thing is, we didn't exactly rush Rory into sex. She may look 12, but she's 20 in the story and in her second year of college. She's a normal girl, and, in fact, she held off having sex later than most girls in TV do.

THR: (New WB entertainment president) David Janollari is a supporter of the show?
Sherman-Palladino: David Janollari is the happiest person on the face of the Earth, which I never trust at all. (Laughs) He's so happy and positive and joyful, so sweet and easy to work with. That's the guy I want to pitch to as a writer. Yes, he's a big supporter of the show. People are inspired to do their best work in an environment where it's fun and upbeat; that's what David helps make happen.

THR: Why do you think "Gilmore" has been able to stick around and succeed for as long as it has?
Sherman-Palladino: The network has allowed us to make this show our way, which is to draw out our stories slowly. One of the problems today in TV is that everything has to be so instant. I watch other shows where the lead characters have slept together by Episode 4 broken up by Episode 6, are back together by Episode 8 -- I mean, by the end of the season, what do you have left?
Palladino: We don't jam a lot of plot into every episode. The result is that we leave the audience something always to look forward to. It's not just instant gratification.

THR: You both seem to have your hand in every aspect of the show. Are you ever accused of being control freaks?
Sherman-Palladino: It's more quality control, really. The bar is set very high on this show. We have some wonderful people who work for us. But it ultimately falls onto us, and we owe it to our cast, in particular, to make this show as good as it can possibly be.

THR:Where do you see the show going from here? Do you see 100 more episodes?
Palladino: That's really unknown. We know right now that we're here and having a nice time. But we honestly don't know from year to year where the plot is going or if the show will even be around.
Sherman-Palladino: We can't predict if the show will be back next season. But I do know what the series finale is; I know what the last two lines are. But I'm not going to tell you.

Oh Ellen, thanks for having me
For my 100th episode
Alex Trebek is here too
I came in second on his show
But with Mardi Gras I kind of have a problem
Cause you see
I don't like to be topless
No don't give it away for free
I guess that's just me
Oh Ellen, I don't want to show my melons
Just for a string of beads

Welcome to the Untitled Tom Fontana Project guide at TV Tome.

The WB has given the green light to an untitled one-hour project from Fontana and fellow "Homicide: Life on the Street" alumna Julie Martin.

Set at a small liberal-arts college in Manhattan, the project is an ensemble drama about the lives of resident and commuter students from all kinds of social and economic backgrounds and their teachers.

"The show specifically centers on a human behavior seminar where (the students) openly talk about their sexual lives or the lack of sexual lives and come to understand themselves and the world they live in better," Fontana said.

Martin and Fontana penned the script together. The two also are executive producing.

Welcome to the Supernatural (2005) guide at TV Tome.

McG ("The O.C.") and writer Eric Kripke ("Tarzan") have booked a put pilot commitment from the Frog for a new drama described as a cross between "The X-Files" and "Route 66." The project will track Sam, a recent Stanford graduate, who along with his estranged older brother Dean encounter unusual ghosts and local creatures straight out of American folk lore and urban legends during a road trip from San Francisco back home to Los Angeles. McG and Kripe will executive produce alongside Stephanie Savage at the former's Warner Bros. Television-based Wonderland Sound and Vision.
