Super Fly
The Man of Steel is reborn
June 23, 2006
The Man of Steel. Clark Kent. The Last Son of Krypton. Kal-El. If there’s anything that’s a true piece of Americana, it’s Superman.
In the last 67 years, Superman has undergone many changes and been subject to many different interpretations.
For instance, when he first appeared, he could only jump — not fly - — about an eighth of a mile. His strength was amazing, but limited. Nothing short of an artillery shell could pierce his skin.
Later in his history, he could do things like sneeze out stars and push planets out of orbit.
He also burned with his eyes, blew super breath, used X-Ray and telescopic vision and a gaggle of other powers that came and went over the years.
Superman was created by high school students Jerry Siegel and Joel Shuster from Cleveland, Ohio, who drew comic strips for their high school newspapers.
After producing several different failed comics, one of them being the “Rise of the Superman,” an anti-hero based on Nietzsche’s idea of the Übermensch, or Superman, Siegel and Shuster were going nowhere with their comic careers.
In the spring of 1938, Superman was re-envisioned as an alien named Kal-El, from a planet known as Krypton. Siegel and Shuster pitched the idea to National Allied Publishing, later known as D.C., which introduced the character in Action Comics #1, costing a dime.
Unlike the Übermensch, the Germanic idea of a superior man, Superman took on the identity of a mild-mannered individual named Clark Kent, a reporter for the fictional newspaper, originally the Daily Star, but later cemented as The Daily Planet.
In 1940, Superman made his way from comics to the radio. Familiar elements and characters arose from the show, such as Kryptonite, editor Perry White, cub reporter Jimmy Olsen and the opening phrases “Look, up in the sky! It’s a bird! It’s a plane! It’s Superman!”
By 1941, 17 episodes of animated shorts were created by the Max Fleischer Cartoon Studios. Bud Collyer, who performed Superman’s voice on the radio, was also his voice in the animations. He continued to voice Superman cartoons until his death in 1969.
Reflecting the times, the cartoons were vehemently anti-Japanese and German, portraying the Axis powers as villainous and monkey-like.
By the end of WWII, Superman had gotten so strong he was almost indestructible, giving rise to more emotionally charged storylines.
At the same time, his teenage years made their way into the comic books. As Superboy, he protected his fictional hometown of Smallville, Kansas and lived with his parents Jonathan and Martha Kent.
Kirk Alyn was the first to portray Superman in live action on the big screen, in serial adventures beginning in 1948. Lois Lane was played by actress Noel Neill, who also portrayed the character on the later TV series, and will make a cameo appearance in the movie “Superman Returns.”
“Superman and The Mole Men,” the first film featuring George Reeves as Superman, was released in 1951.
Reeves carried on as Superman in the first TV program featuring the Man of Steel. The phrases “Faster than a speeding bullet. More powerful than a locomotive. Able to leap tall buildings in a single bound — it’s Superman!” were uttered for the first time in Reeves’ show.
It was hugely popular for its seven seasons on the air, but Reeves felt typecast. In 1959, he died of a gunshot wound, apparently self-inflicted, although that verdict has been disputed.
In the 1960s and ‘70s, with the cultural upheavals of rock ‘n’ roll, Vietnam protests and Watergate, Superman had begun to seem dated, irrelevant. The campy Batman TV series and child-themed cartoons rent even more of their power.
Then came the 1978 “Superman: The Movie,” going back to the beginning to reclaim the myth.
Directed by Richard Donner, hot off his hit “The Omen,” with a script by Mario Puzo of “The Godfather” fame, the movie featured Christopher Reeve as a straight-arrow Superman, Gene Hackman as Lex Luthor and Marlon Brando as Kal-El’s Kryptonian father Jor-El.
It was a groundbreaking hit, re-establishing the superhero genre as viable for film, treating the subject matter with respect, albeit often with tongue-in-cheek.
Reeve starred in four Superman films, the first two of them blockbusters, with much of the second movie’s footage shot at the same time as the first. Annette O’Toole played Clark’s high school love interest, Lana Lang, in the 1983 “Superman III,” and now plays Clark’s mother, Martha Kent, on the TV show “Smallville.”
In the late ‘80s, a Superboy television show ran just four seasons.
In 1990, back in the comic world, Clark finally proposed to Lois Lane and revealed his secret to her, after a 50-year courtship, in Superman #50.
In 1992, Superman was killed by a monster from space nicknamed Doomsday, in Superman #75.
In 1993, Superman came back to life in new incarnations, concurrent with the premiere of the new TV show, “Lois & Clark: The New Adventures of Superman,” starring Dean Cain as Clark Kent and Teri Hatcher as Lois Lane. The show ran from 1993-97.
His death not withstanding, Clark and Lois were finally married, in the comics, in 1996. Lois and Clark were also married in the TV show.
In late 1996, a new Superman cartoon appeared, paying homage to the Fleischer cartoons. Since then, there have been several other related animated series and movies such as “Justice League Unlimited” and the animated 2006 film “Superman: Braniac Attacks.”
“Smallville,” the newest TV interpretation of Superman, chronicling Clark’s youth developing his powers, minus the Superboy suit, premiered in 2001, just after the Sept. 11 attacks. Now in its sixth season, “Smallville” remains one of the most popular shows on the air.
Now in 2006, the new film “Superman Returns” is about to hit theaters. Just as Donner cast an unknown Christopher Reeve in the 1970s, new face Brandon Routh plays the hero in “Superman Returns.”
In the almost 70 years of Superman’s existence, the character has been re-envisioned, reinterpreted and recast continually, still fascinating readers and fans.
One thing is apparent: The only place to go is up, up and away.…
Superman Facts
# When he first appeared, Superman could lift a car, leap an eighth of a mile and withstand injury up to an artillery shell.
# Kryptonians achieve full powers under a yellow sun, such as that of Earth. Krypton – before it blew – was under a red sun.
# Kal-El was once considered the only survivor of the Krypton explosion, but his cousin, Lara, appeared later on Earth.
# The villain Braniac captured and shrank an entire Kryptonian city, Kandor, which Superman keeps in his Fortress of Solitude until he can figure out how to reverse the shrinkage.
# Kryptonian criminals were exiled to The Phantom Zone. They escape from time to time, in the comics and in the movie “Superman II,” to give Kal-El some super competition.
# Jonathan and Martha Kent gave adopted son Clark a little-known middle name: Joseph.
# Most of Superman’s significant others have had the initials LL: Lana Lang, Lois Lane, Lori Lemaris, Lyla Lerrol and of course, Lex Luthor.
# Superman and Lois first kissed in Superman #3.
# Fifty years passed from their first kiss until Superman/Clark’s proposal to Lois.
# Bodybuilder David Prowse – aka the man in the Darth Vader suit — trained Christopher Reeve to build up his muscles for the Superman movies.
# In “Superman: The Movie,” the actors playing Lois’ parents – seen on a train – are Noel Neill, who played Lois in the ‘50s TV series, and Kirk Alyn, who played Superman in movie serials of the ‘40s and ‘50s.
# Former TV Lois Noel Neill will make a cameo in the new “Superman Returns,” as will Jack Larson, who’s played Jimmy Olsen in movies and TV shows from the ‘50s to today.
# “Superman Returns” director Bryan Singer has some experience handing heroes: His last two movies were “X-Men” and “X2: X-Men United.”
# This new Superman movie went through about 10 years and three very different directors before being made. Among those slated to direct at one time or another: Tim Burton, from a script by Kevin Smith; Brett Ratner (who went on to “X-Men: The Last Stand”); McG; and finally Singer.
# Marlon Brando, as Jor-El, Kal’s father, will return from the dead in “Superman Returns.” Director Bryan Singer is inserting stock footage of Brando shot for the 1978 “Superman: The Movie.”
# Among the actors considered for the starring role in “Superman Returns” are Jason Behr, Jared Padalecki, Josh Hartnett, Paul Walker, Matthew Bomer, Brendan Fraser, Ashton Kutcher, David Boreanaz, Ian Somerhalder, Henry Cavill and Jerry O’Connell. Director Bryan Singer finally settled on unknown Brandon Routh.

danke, Sandra.
