Hier ist ein neues Interview mit Mischa:
Suddenly the willowy film star has morphed into a bored teenager, one hand resting on her stomach, the other playing aimlessly with her dog Charlie’s ear.

When the photographer is finally ready to start Barton peels herself off the bed with the reluctance of an adolescent who doesn’t want to get up for school. Then she straightens her back, extends her long neck, and the elegance returns. She is a star once more.

Although she’s been acting professionally for a decade, Barton is only 19, at least five years younger than her peers on The OC – the outrageously successful soap opera that has made her a star. So if she’s a little sullen, remember she’s still a teenager.

When I arrived at the hotel she was on the phone. ‘Look at it from my point of view,’ she said, her voice full of adolescent indignation. ‘I called you, I texted you, what else was I supposed to do?’

It’s the same conversation the kids at Beverly Hills High School down the road are having. And she’s still not ready to cut the apron strings, insisting on having her mother, Nuala, a large, comfortable-looking woman, sit in on all her press interviews.

Barton is frank, but not sweet, and maybe even a little cold. Her father is British, her mother Irish, and her deep voice is tinged with an English accent. She was born in London, moved to New York when she was four, and has been acting professionally since she was eight when she was discovered at a summer-camp performance.

‘In typical New York fashion there was an agent in the audience who signed me up,’ she says, sitting on the edge of the bed, dressed now in a black poloneck, dark skinny jeans and black flat boots.

She quickly landed a role as a little Russian girl in Slavs!, a play by Tony Kushner, the celebrated writer of Angels in America.

‘I didn’t really realise the seriousness of the situation or how lucky I was to be given a lead,’ says Barton. ‘I think most eight-year-olds don’t know about Tony Kushner, so I went with it and really enjoyed it.’

‘I was the one who was sitting in the audience worrying; she was very happy, actually,’ chimes in Nuala.

Barton gives her the kind of look only a teenage daughter can give her mother. As well as working in the theatre, Barton was a child model (she did a campaign for Calvin Klein kidswear), and eventually moved on to films.

Her first film, Lawn Dogs in 1997, had critics comparing her to a young Jodi Foster and declaring her the acting discovery of the year. She was just 11. She went on to play a young actress in Notting Hill and the vomiting dead girl in The Sixth Sense (both 1999).

Despite her hectic schedule, Barton was a straight-A student. She says she would still like to go to college.

‘You know, you still have that offer from Yale,’ says Nuala.

‘I know Mom,’ says Barton tetchily. ‘But I don’t really have time now, do I?’

Barton landed the role of Marissa Cooper in The OC when she was 16. I’ve been told that after she auditioned for Josh Schwartz, the show’s young creator, he described her as the most beautiful person he had ever seen.

‘She’s going to be a star,’ he said at the time. And he was right. All the characters on The OC – which deals with juicy topics such as teenage sex, drug addiction, divorce and crime among good-looking, hard-partying rich kids – suffer personal tragedies and crises, but none more than Barton’s Marissa Cooper.

In the first two seasons her father went to jail for embezzlement, she overdosed on painkillers, was almost sent to a psychiatric institution, moved into her lesbian lover’s house, moved out, almost witnessed a suicide and shot her boyfriend’s brother, who was trying to rape her.

‘Marissa is kind of like a heightened version of any real teenager,’ says Barton. ‘She’s pretty interesting for me to play, but sometimes she’s a little unrealistic.’

Just a little, maybe, but like her character Barton herself is still trying to figure out who she is – struggling with independence and dependence.

She has just bought a $7 million house in Beverly Hills which she shares with her mother and younger sister Hania, 17, while her father still lives in New York.

What she likes most about it, she says, is that it has a separate apartment that allows her to live with her family and still have a private place.

When I ask about her social life, and whether she’s friends with the Hollywood ‘It’ girls she is often lumped with – Lindsay Lohan, Paris Hilton, Nicole Richie, Jessica Simpson – she is quick to distance herself from that scene.

‘I’m not friends with Paris,’ she says. ‘It is a common misconception that everybody is friends with each other. Not that I know anything about them. I don’t have an opinion on them.’

Barton speaks convincingly of not being interested in the young Hollywood lifestyle, but it doesn’t quite fit with her high-profile relationships. Her past and current boyfriends are both notorious players who pluck their girlfriends from the very scene Barton says she dislikes so much.

For a year she dated Brandon Davis, grandson of Marvin Davis, the former oilman and owner of 20th Century Fox. He’s also a playboy who has been romantically linked with the actress Shannon Doherty and George Bush’s daughter, Jenna.

Now she is in a relationship with Cisco Adler, the skuzzy long-haired son of the producer Lou Adler who used to be engaged to Rod Stewart’s daughter, Kimberly.

Of course, Barton refuses to discuss her relationships. ‘I haaate talking about guys,’ she says. ‘I try to stay clear of it, if you wouldn’t mind, because I’m not a big fan of the topic.’

Barton, the new face of Accessorize, is much more amenable to questions about fashion. Even in Los Angeles she’s considered a fashion icon, especially deft at the vintage shabby chic look in a town where the competition is fierce. She describes her style as ‘probably pretty eclectic, a little bit of everything.’

She believes her British origins have influenced her fashion sense. ‘I’m not American in the first place, so the way my mom dressed me was completely different from the rest of the kids at school,’ she says.

‘It wasn’t so bad,’ Nuala chimes in. ‘I mean, whatever. It is what it is,’ says Barton. ‘It was different, but that’s OK. I think that now that I’m older I’ve kept some of that with me, like my individuality.’

The OC shoots for nine months a year so Barton only has the summer to work on other projects. This summer she spent two months in Italy shooting an adaptation of Boccaccio’s Decameron.

‘I wanted to do something that was interesting to me and challenging. And this was a period piece, and I just felt, like, it was different enough.’

I’m not convinced that Barton’s role in Decameron: Angels and Virgins is so different from her role on The OC. Barton describes her character as ‘very innocent, but kind of a tough girl. She comes from a wealthy family. Her parents die in the plague. She is betrothed to marry this character she realises is manipulating her for her money and then she falls in love with a boy from the wrong side of the tracks.’

Except for the plague part, it all sounds pretty Marissa Cooper to me. And the truth is, ‘very innocent, but kind of a tough girl’ is a pretty good description of Barton, too.
