Lane and Wallace: Sidekicks Rock
Jun 27, 11:10 AM

Come fall, Tuesdays on The CW might be my new favorite TV night of the week.

Because when The WB and UPN got married, "Gilmore Girls" and "Veronica Mars" became stepsisters, and fans of good television everywhere rejoiced. Lane from "Gilmore Girls" (Keiko Agena) and Wallace (Percy Daggs III) from "Veronica Mars" were in Seattle for the local CW station's upfront _ industry-speak for advertisers' event with fancy ice sculpture _ which is where I dared Keiko to rush the stage and start playing drums with the house band. She drums in real life, you see, and she also was recently married, just like her character on "Gilmore Girls."

I asked her if there had been any "Memoirs of a Geisha"-style controversy over the fact that Lane is Korean and Keiko is Japanese. "I was really concerned about that in year one," she said. "My best friend is Korean, and she gives me a hard time, but (fans) haven't been viciously against it." Besides, Keiko eats kimchi (for breakfast!), so she's almost forgiven for butchering the Korean language on national TV.

"We cannot apologize enough for how bad our Korean is," she said, referring also to her onscreen mom, the formidable (and Japanese) Mrs. Kim (Emily Kuroda).

Mrs. Kim may be scary on the show, but in real life, she is "about as opposite from her character as anybody can be," Keiko said. "She is the nicest, most unassuming tech geek you will ever meet. She's always telling me about new gadgets and computer programs."

Keiko, meantime, is a home/gardening geek.

"I only watch HGTV: Candice Olsen, 'Landscapers' Challenge,' 'Designing for the Sexes,' " she said. "There's not one show on HGTV I don't watch. I've convinced myself that I will someday actually tile something."

Despite widespread apprehension about the upcoming seventh season of "Gilmore," which will be the first without series creators Amy Sherman-Palladino and Daniel Palladino, Keiko remains optimistic. "I think the show will continue to have legs without them," she said. "I'm not as nervous as I would be if this were year three. ... I'm kind of excited to see what new eyes will bring to it." The cast starts filming the seventh and probably final season in July.

Percy Daggs III, who plays the amiable Wallace Fennel on "Veronica Mars," arrived at the party with his mom. He is maybe the nicest guy you will ever meet. We talked about the changes, both onscreen and off, between the first and second seasons of "Veronica Mars."
Spoiler
"The first season ... the energy was so raw and so thirsty," he said. "This year, people are doing their own thing, different projects."

The cast expanded in season two, which resulted in less screen time for some of the original five series regulars. Wallace, formerly known only as Veronica's trusty sidekick, got his own storyline but appeared in fewer episodes.

"You got to see more of his personal life, instead of him just getting a file or something," Percy said. "I was raised by a single mom (like his character), so there is a toughness that I bring to Wallace."

Next season, Percy says he is looking forward to resuming his relationship with Veronica after spending most of the second season away from Neptune.
"He has become the Watson to her Sherlock Holmes," he said. "I like playing the sidekick. I like him coming through for her in the clutch, because that's what a best friend does."

He's also looking forward to the opportunity to draw more viewers to the critically acclaimed but ratings-plagued series when it moves to The CW.

"I think our show is the kind of show where we needed to move from the pond to the lake," he said. "I'm a pressure player."

hehe.. seht mal, was Ausiello (hoffentlich nicht) bevor steht:
Question: Hey! Any scoop on the Emmy semifinalists? — Zion

Ausiello: Awards-show junkie Tom O'Neil listed what may be the top 10 comedy-series finalists and eight of the 10 drama finalists in his Gold Derby blog. He also posted what could be the top 15 candidates in the comedy acting slots. If accurate, it means Lauren Graham cleared the first hurdle. I swear, if LG doesn't score a nod this year I'm going to seriously consider quitting the biz and opening a Tasti D Lite shop. We'll find out next Thursday when nominations are announced.

Hey Sandra!

...Zuletzt hatte Milo in der Folge 6.08 "Let me Hear Your Balalaikas Ringing Out" der "Gilmore Girls" einen Gastauftritt.

Question: Please help us put an end to our agony: There have been rumors, but do you know for sure if Milo Ventimiglia and Alexis Bledel have broken up? — Marianna

Ausiello: This is your lucky day, Marianna. Last Friday, Milo himself dropped by the TV Guide offices for a quick meet-and-greet with the staff, and guess what question popped out of my mouth first? C'mon, guess. [Pause] Yes — your question! And sadly, it's true. He confirmed that he and Alexis are no longer an item and he's back on the market. The extremely private actor then added with a laugh, "And that's about all you'll get out of me." Well, that's all the private stuff, anyway. Milo did dish about a possible return to Gilmore Girls, saying it's "never going to happen" — especially now that Team Palladino have hit the road. "I felt [Jess' story] was done a long time ago, but Dan and Amy kept saying, 'We got some cool things, and we're really hoping you'll be a part of it.' So I went back and I kind of enjoyed what Jess turned into. He turned into a grown-up. Watching that last episode, I was like, 'It's done.'" Milo said a bunch of other stuff about GG and his roles in Rocky 6 and Heroes, which, if you're interested, I can post in the Ausiello Report later this week, or whenever I feel like it. Just let me know.

Lauren Graham, The Gilmore Girls: Graham is the poster child for actors who have never received a deserved Emmy nomination. As hip mom Lorelai Gilmore, she rifles off TV’s most rapid-fire dialogue with a sense of timing that beats her equally motormouthed co-stars. But this season, Graham was at her best, as Lorelai’s glibness was leavened by her struggles with her estranged daughter (now reconciled), her reluctant fiance Luke (Scott Patterson) and the revelation that Luke has a daughter from a previous fling. It’s time, Emmy voters; someone’s gotta fill the slot once reserved for Patricia Heaton.
