Ausiello: You Shane West fans are relentless. Just to get you guys off my back, I rang up West's manager, who confirmed what I told you last week: At the moment, there are no concrete plans for him to return to ER. If and when he does go back, it probably won't happen until later in the season since West is shooting back-to-back movies right now.

Tvguide "ER Invites Old Favorites to Scrub Back In"


There's no series finale written and producers and cast aren't yet ready to sign off for good but if, as many predict, ER's County General closes its doors at the end of its upcoming 14th season, the NBC drama wants to lure back as many of its cast as it can. Noah Wyle (Dr. John Carter), who's popped in and out of the show for a number of years, is returning for multiple episodes, and there will be no running around in Africa this time. "He'll be in Chicago in the ER, interacting with all our people," executive producer David Zabel tells TVGuide.com. The doc is back to check out the Joshua Carter Center, a gift from his big-bucks family, as well as for a medical concern. In turn, ER is hoping to bring back Thandie Newton, who plays Carter's wife Kem.

Zabel says they've also talked to Gloria Reuben (as Jeannie Boulet) and Julianna Margulies (Carol Hathaway) about returns. "Julianna's doing a show now (midseason's Canterbury's Law), but we can always write a story that can shoot in a couple of days," the exec says. Also on their dream list and in the mix of story ideas being discussed: Eriq La Salle (Peter Benton), William H. Macy (David Morgenstern), and Sally Field and Danny Glover, who have had runs as Abby's mom and Pratt's dad. Fans might also expect visits from more recent exiles Laura Innes (Weaver) and Shane West (Ray).

But what about the most successful ER alumni of all? "We're always thinking of ways to bring Dr. Ross back on the show," says Zabel with a laugh. "And now might be a good time, because I hear George [Clooney] needs the work."

Exclusive: 24's Michelle Dessler Rushed to ER!

Sources confirm that Reiko Aylesworth — who kicked ass as CTU boss Michelle Dessler (until her inevitable death) — is joining the cast as County General's hot and hip new chaplain who starts a very intimate, ahem, prayer group with John Stamos' Gates. (For those of you who suck at innuendo, "intimate prayer group" is a double entendre for "steamy hospital sex.")

And before you go ratting her out to God, Aylesworth's preacher woman is allowed to lead a normal life, and that includes wearing slutty regular clothes and having sex with dating whomever she wants.

Where we left off: Newlywed Luka (Goran Visnjic) left for Croatia on a family emergency, and double amputee Ray (Shane West) left for home. Neela (Parminder Nagra) was in peril as a peace rally turned violent, Tony (John Stamos) lost his foster daughter, and new ER chief Moretti (Stanley Tucci) shook things up.

What's next: The emergency-room team bonds to try to save a severely injured Neela "in a very fast-paced adrenaline-rising first episode that resets the surrogate family of the ER," says executive producer David Zabel. It also sets up the enmity between Moretti and Tony, who is exiled from the ER. On her own without Luka, Abby (Maura Tierney) battles her addiction problems. When he finally returns (yes, Visnjic will have a major role this season), he'll have his brother with him. But the long-suffering Neela has fun! She gets an adoring young protégé and is drafted to play in an intramural ice-hockey game. Plus: Noah Wyle returns for a number of episodes! Dr. John Carter comes back to Chicago to check on his foundation's HIV treatment center and to get help with a relative's medical problem. Ray will show up for closure with Neela, and Weaver (Laura Innes) could visit from her new Florida digs. "This season there's a bunch of people who may come back from the past," Zabel hints, putting Julianna Margulies, Gloria Reuben, William Macy, Sally Fields and Danny Glover on his wish list.

Ausiello: At the show's 300th episode bash this past weekend, exec producer David Zabel weighed in on that very subject. "We certainly might see Ray again," Zabel said. "It's a definite possibility and it's something we've talked about. We have ideas for the next part of [his] story…. Shane's a great guy who loved being here, and I think that if we came up with a good enough story to bring him back, he'd be happy to come back."

Ausiello: I'd say there's a very good chance Ray will make an appearance (or two) when ER returns with the first of six consecutive episodes on April 10. A very, very, very good chance.

As for Ray's visit: In these pages, we first see Ray in the ER talking with Neela and Brenner. Brenner observes that Ray has been lucky enough to work with the "brilliant Dr. Rasgotra," and Ray says he has had the privilege. Ray tells them he is practicing now in Baton Rouge. When Brenner excuses himself, Ray tells Neela Brenner seems like a d*ck. She suggests they go for coffee, but Ray thinks working out will be better after traveling. Neela has some things to do first, and Ray goes with her upstairs. There, Neela gets a compliment on a good call and helps a patient whose alarms are ringing. Ray smiles at Neela, and the directions say he is proud of her.

While waiting, Ray meets up with Morris in the break room. No details on their chat.

Later, Ray and Neela go for a run along the lake. Ray not only has standard "walking legs" but also special running prosthetics. Ray suggests a four-mile run to the aquarium, and Neela says the loser has to buy dinner. Ray takes off--he is "smooth, athletic and fast." Neela smiles and tries to catch up, and they run into the sunset.

Ray is in town for a conference set for the morning. At the end of the evening, he is ready to go to his hotel. Neela says he can stay with her, but Ray says that he is in a good space now and that Neela seems good also and so he is going to go. They share a lingering hug. He takes her face in his hands, kisses her softly, and leaves. It's not exactly how Neela wanted it to end. As he unlocks his car, she smiles and waves to him from her window and thinks about what could have been.

Exclusive: Shane West's 'ER' Comeback a 'Double Surprise'

Dr. Ross? Pshaw. The ER return that most fans — or at least the most vocal fans — have been clamoring for is that of Dr. Barnett. And this fall, their prayers will be answered when Shane West's Ray heads back to County General with a new lease on life and eyes for the woman that got away, his ex-roomie and unrequited love, Neela.

Let's rewind first: When last we saw Ray, he was heading home to Baton Rouge to mend his broken heart and recover from a tragic car accident that left him a double amputee. As West points out, "He wasn't in a very good head space."

Well, a lot can change in a year. When Ray returns in the Oct. 30 episode, he'll have both feet firmly planted on the ground — literally and figuratively. "He's walking on his own again," reveals executive producer Joe Sachs. As we'll learn, Ray has endured months of rehab, during which he was fitted with new cutting edge prosthetics. "He in no way appears disabled. He's been through hell and has come out a better, stronger guy. He's matured. He knows what's important in his life."

What or who? Although only back for a brief time — Ray's in Chicago for a medical conference related to physical medicine/rehabilitation (his new specialty, natch) — Sachs hints that his presence has a huge impact on Neela. "His return affects her in a big way," he says. "It stir the embers of that relationship and makes her question, "Could I be with this guy now?"

Sachs isn't providing an answer to that question, although he promises that "Reela" fans will be "satisfied by the story." Adds West: "He's coming back at the right time, when she needs that friend and possibly that romance back. There are definitely sparks reignited."

So much so that the Oct. 30 episode won't be the last we'll see of Ray. West is on board for at least one more episode, to air shortly before ER signs off for good in May. "It's going to be a double surprise," the actor teases. "One in the beginning of the season when he returns, and one at the end." Hmmm…. might that second surprise involve oh, I dunno, a ring?

Wie schön, Ray ist wieder da, wenn auch nur für eine Folge (?).
Da hätte ich eigentlich beinah einen Grund wieder einmal eine neue ER-Folge zu gucken. Seit Shane West aus der Serie verabschiedet wurde und ER imo immer schwächer wurde, habe ich abgeschaltet und nur noch ab und an die Boxen geguckt.

Er wird in mindestens 2 Folgen dabei sein. Mal sehen, ob die Staffel doch noch von 19 auf 22 verlängert wird.

Ich freu mich, in der 15. Staffel ein paar "alte" Gesichter wieder zu sehen. Freut mich auch das Shane West wieder da ist. Und Noah Whyle...

Freu mich auf die 15. Staffel und bin gespannt, wie es weitergeht. Allerdings glaube ich nach wie vor, da es gut ist, wenn nach der Staffel Schluss ist, irgendwann fehlen einfach neue Storylines usw. Da wiederholt sich alles irgendwie einmal.
